Board Certified Chaplain | Director of Physician Wellbeing

After nearly a decade “on the continent,” Rev. Joshua J. Almanza returned to his island home of O‘ahu, Hawaiʻi, to work amongst the community that shaped his early life. Joshua currently serves in one of Hawaii’s largest healthcare systems as Director of Physician Wellbeing, contributing to the larger mission of creating a healthier Hawaiʻi. At the heart of this work is caring for the spiritual and emotional wellbeing of healers who care for thousands of lives that span the group of islands. Before coming home, Joshua earned a BA in Speech Communication at the University of Washington in Seattle. Joshua went on to serve university students at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Collins, Colorado before matriculating at Princeton Theological Seminary, in Princeton, New Jersey, where he earned an MDiv.
Upon returning to his place of origin, Joshua completed Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and began a specialized ministry at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women and Children, where he provided spiritual care and emotional support for children, parents, and families as a healthcare chaplain. Joshua served in critical areas of the medical center, comforting families through faith formation in pediatric oncology, pediatric intensive care, pediatric cardiac care, pediatric palliative care, and the emergency department. His ministry also covered the medical, nursing, and administrative staff, directly and indirectly supporting the spiritual health and faith formation of these healthcare professionals and their families. During the COVID pandemic, Joshua served his community as a hospice chaplain, covering rural and low-income communities on O‘ahu, deepening his connection with the values of ALOHA and the path toward peace.
Joshua is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC). Joshua is currently working on a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership for Adaptation and Change at Chaminade University of Honolulu with a focus on the spiritual element of health and wellbeing. If you find yourself in Honolulu, or anywhere on the gathering place of O‘ahu, please email him at, as he loves to meet new folks and play tour guide.
